What happens when you take raw acoustic blues and blend it with hard-hitting funk? Ask singer-songwriter-guitarist Keziah Jones and he’d say the answer is ‘blufunk’. That’s Jones’s brand of music; a boiling cauldron that melds the sizzle of Afrobeat with the swagger of the blues, along with big nods towards Motown, James Brown and jazz, a tipping point for the streetbeats that populate this sound. Not surprisingly, Jones — born Olufemi Sanyaolu in Lagos, Nigeria — talks of the music spanning Lagos, Paris and New York on his MySpace page, with influences as varied as the trans-continental excursions. Jones himself calls it “modern Afro folk with conscious lyrics, elements of jazz, blues and folk”.
