The Oberoi Group is lending a helping hand to students interested in making a career in the hospitality industry with its systematic training and education programme (Step). The programme, which was started in 2004, has received an enthusiastic response so far. The three-year course provides specialised training to undergraduates in kitchen or hotel operations, while they are pursuing a bachelors degree in tourism studies from the Indira Gandhi Open University.
The Oberoi Group bears most of the expenses on behalf of the trainees, including accommodation, meals on duty, fees for the bachelors degree, training material, basic medical benefits and even a telephone call home every week. The trainees also receive a monthly stipend from the hospitality major.
On completion of the programme, trainees receive a certificate of proficiency from the Oberoi Group. The programme equips them to work in deluxe and first- class hotels and resorts. After graduation, trainees are also eligible for admission to the Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development (OCLD).
The application forms for Step will be available on the website (www.oberoihotels. com / careers) from February 1 till March 31, 2009. Candidates can choose the location, date and time of the interview from the options indicated. The interviews are scheduled to start on April 1, 2009. Thereafter, the candidates will have to clear three stages in the selection process to be eligible.

Games galore
Nopany Vidyalaya celebrated Children’s Day by organising a fete named Euphoria. Since early morning, students made a beeline for the games stalls, participating in a wide variety of games like 7 up-7 down, tailing the donkey, cannon the castle, lucky dip, feeding the crown and drop a coin.
To spice up things, there was mouth-watering food on offer. Tempting hot jalebis, crisp French fries, momos, spring rolls and papri chaat left the students asking for more. It was a break from regular school for the students as well as the teachers.

Ode to nature
The German department of the School of Languages at the Ramakrishna Mission Institute Of Culture, Gol park, recently held its annual cultural event. It was quite a memorable experience for the participants as it was their first stage performance and that too in a different language.
The theme was natur (nature). The junior teachers participated along with the students. The poems recited included Friedrich Holderlin’s Geh Unter and Goethe’s Ich Sauge and Wasser.
The programme ended on a note of hope with the massage that man learns to conserve and love Mother Nature and make the world a beautiful place to live in.

Hard times
The Loyola Institute of Business Administration (Liba), a premier B-school in India, recently held a two-day symposium on management in challenging times. In its third edition, Liba Insight organised discussions to find solutions to the ongoing financial crisis.
Stalwarts from various industries spoke about the skills required to sail through the tough times.
Final countdown
CNBC-TV18, a leading business news channel, along with the management portal MBAUniverse.com and global research agency TNS has come up with a list of B-schools called “A of B”. Based on a dual methodology and accessing all stakeholders — including students, prospects, alumni, corporate recruiters, headhunters and management gurus — CNBC-TV18’s list of B-schools reflects both popular opinion and performance.
To achieve a balanced perspective, “A of B” was bifurcated into two parallel research exercises. One part of the initiative was a perception study addressed to over 7,500 students, alumni, recruiters and headhunters who were asked about their preferences in management education.
The second aspect was a data-based study on quantifiable data as provided by over 60 participating B-schools . The “A of B” ranking has drawn wide support from B-schools, recruiters, MBA students, alumni and MBA aspirants.

Fearless minds
Plan India, a child development organisation, recently launched a nationwide campaign called Learn without Fear. Noted film actor, patron and goodwill ambassador of Plan, Anil Kapoor, inaugurated an exhibition titled Voices of Children that highlighted the issue of violence in schools.
Shanta Sinha, chairperson of the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), and Roland Angerer, country director, Plan International (India), were present on the occasion.
The campaign will travel across India to gather support for providing a safer learning environment for children. Speaking on the occasion, Kapoor said, “Children often face violence in school in the form of corporal punishment. It is my appeal that we protect them from any kind of violence.” Learn without Fear will work at the local, national, state and regional levels to influence governments to introduce legislation that will make schools a safer place for children.
The campaign is currently being launched in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Rajasthan, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and New Delhi.

A different day
The students of Pretoria High received a pleasant surprise on Children’s Day. None of us had an inkling of any celebration but our teachers had preplanned a day full of singing and dancing.
To our surprise, we were taken to Chandanagar, where a fun fiesta had been organised. We spent some quality time with our teachers, interacting with them and getting to know them better. It was a truly memorable day, and we hope to enjoy more such celebrations in future.
