Easy does it

Style according to you is...

Very individualistic. Comfort is the key word for me. If I were to take my pick of being a style icon or being comfortable, I would choose the latter. Fashion is a reflection of what I believe in and not about aping trends.

Wardrobe classics that will look great even 10 years down the line

I think a pair of jeans and the little black dress will endure.

Five items in your closet you can’t do without

I live in a pair of shorts at home because it’s so sultry in Mumbai. I also can’t do without my short black dress with appropriate accessories, a pair of skinny jeans that does wonders for my silhouette, a few cropped tops and a short denim skirt.

Bad buys — which eventually proved to be bad choices

There are several long tops I bought that I thought would work well as dresses or even when paired with jeans. But I never got around to wearing them because I didn’t think they complimented my figure.

Most extravagant buy

In recent times, I bought a designer sari for my sister’s wedding which was quite expensive. But I haven’t had the chance to wear it again.

What do you like to mix and match?

I have always believed in accessorising an outfit. I love wearing beads along with chunky bangles, belts and shoes. The simplest of clothes can look great with the right accessories.

If you could change one part of your body, what would it be?

Actually I am happy with the way I am.

Favourite shopping destination

It’s Dubai which is abreast of the latest international trends and where you get all the luxury brands under one roof. I also like roaming around in Camden Market in London apart from doing some flea market hopping in Goa and New York.

You have a fetish for

Shoes. Whenever I go shopping, I invariably return with a pair of shoes. This habit is distracting and annoying at times. But I have a huge variety of footwear to fall back on — from stilettos and slippers to ballerinas.

Favourite accessories

Watches for sure. I just can’t do without my sleek Christian Dior watch that has a platinum finish.

Latest buys

Recently I went on a shopping spree in New York and came back with a beautiful black bag and a pair of black, 4-inch peep-toe stilettos from Aldo; a couple of dresses from Mango, a chic red bag from a Thai exhibition which was a steal because it is designer and a yellow handbag from a local store.

The biggest fashion faux pas a person can make

It can be a big turnoff if someone wears a bright ensemble and teams it with loud make-up.

How would you describe your closet — well-organised and spanking clean or dreadfully cluttered?

I like to prioritise my things. Of my three wardrobes, two are immaculate because that’s where I stock all my expensive dresses. It would be criminal not take care of them. But the third closet, that holds my everyday wear, is kind of rumpled. Otherwise, I am a cleanliness fiend.

The trend you are sporting at the moment

I am going all out with colours and since yellow is the hue of the season, my dresses, shoes, bangles, bags all have shades of yellow in them.

Essentials in your handbag

A MAC compact, a kohl pencil, a lip balm, a clip to hold my hair back and a deodorant.

Indian designers whose clothes you love wearing

I am fond of clothes by Rocky S because they are sexy and are at the same time very comfortable.

Whose closet do you envy and why?

Bipasha Basu as she dresses very well.

Is there any outfit you love to wear but which your family just hates?

Not really. At the end of the day, what matters is the way you carry yourself in whatever you wear. And that’s one thing I am very particular about.

Inherited treasures

The gold, kundan and navratan jewellery that my mother has passed on to me.

Vacation essentials

A pair of sunglasses.

(As told to Arundhati Basu)
