Croaking marble

The marbled narrow-mouthed frog Ramanella variegate, belongs to the Microhylidae family of frogs. It is commonly found in northern Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal.

It can occupy a wide range of habitats — from forests and grasslands to human settlements. It has a wide body but a small head and a narrow mouth and a neck. It is generally olive-brown or dark brown in colour with light brown, yellow and cream patches, which give it the appearance of a marble.

The marbled frog is nocturnal and quite shy and is usually spotted only during the monsoons. A male frog has a mating call which is quite loud and distinct and the “quay quay” can be heard over long distances. This is because a specially designed vocal sac in the throat of the male amplifies its calls.
