Accident claim

New Delhi, Dec. 27: The Supreme Court has held that insurance companies are not liable to compensate heirs of accident victims who died while hitching a ride.

The verdict came as the court set aside a Punjab and Haryana High Court order that directed the National Insurance Company to pay Rs 1,40,000 to the family of one Sunil Kumar, who died in a tempo accident in 2002 while returning from a wedding.

IIM letter

Ahmedabad (PTI): IIM Ahmedabad has written to its alumni urging them to support it in successfully accomplishing placement of students this year. Sources said the institute had written that the students were slightly apprehensive about placements. But IIMA officials said it was a routine letter.

DMK chief

Chennai (PTI): Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi has been elected DMK president for the 10th consecutive time at its general council meeting. K. Anbazhagan was re-elected general secretary for the eighth time in a row and M.K. Stalin was appointed deputy general secretary and treasurer.

Pataudi blow

Bhopal (PTI): The scions of the former Nawab of Bhopal, including Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, have been directed by a revenue court to transfer the ownership of the Rs 30-crore Ginnauri Kothi to the Madhya Pradesh government.

Naidu held

Hyderabad (PTI): Desam chief Chandrababu Naidu and state BJP chief Bandaru Dattatreya were held on Saturday for protesting eviction of residents near the Congress headquarters here.
