- BIT Sindri seeks autonomy

Dhanbad, July 5: After getting the general autonomy nod from the state, BIT, Sindri, has now started gearing up for academic autonomy from Vinoba Bhave University (VBU) on the pattern of St Xavier’s College, Ranchi.

BIT, Sindri, has sought relevant documents from St Xavier’s College — the lone autonomous college of the state.

A representative of the institute will visit Ranchi on July 10 in this regard.

The institute director is also likely to discuss the issue during his proposed talks with the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) authorities at New Delhi in a week.

The move is aimed at regularising the session and streamlining other academic activities in the institute for which it is dependent on VBU to which it is affiliated.

The institute’s decision is unexpected since it was likely to try for the deemed university status after getting the autonomy nod from the state.

Explaining the reason for this move, institute director S.K. Singh said that having failed to introduce any professional/vocational course, including, MCA and MBA, the institute might not be able to get the deemed university status at present.

Lack of other resources and infrastructure, including acute shortage of manpower, are other hurdles for the institute trying to get an autonomy status.

The requirement of an NOC from the university and the state, including the Science and Technology department, is another prerequisite for an institute staking its claim for a deemed university status.

Singh, who is set to leave for New Delhi on Monday for talks with the AICTE authorities on various issues including academic autonomy, said that though the institute enjoyed autonomy in revision of syllabus, and setting of question papers under VBU, difficult days lie ahead.

This is due to the increasing number of colleges, including the university’s own college, and a number of private colleges run by VBU.

“BIT, Sindri, may face difficulty in maintaining the regularity of the session due to the late session of the other colleges, including private colleges,” he said.
