Bagan appeal to Fifa

Calcutta: Mohun Bagan have approached Fifa asking the world governing body to intervene in the Bhaichung Bhutia case. A 255-page document was sent to the Indian Football Association on Wednesday to be forwarded to Fifa. It was learnt that Mohun Bagan have challenged the All India Football Federation-appointed arbitrator’s decision to allow Bhutia to sign for East Bengal.

Goalless draw

Calcutta: Peerless were held to a goalless draw by George Telegraph in a Premier Division match at Khardah on Wednesday. Peerless, now have five points from three matches while George have four from equal number of outings.

5-a-side meet

Calcutta: Bignesh Finance defeated Siemens 2-1 in a 5-a-side mercantile football match, organised by the Calcutta Rangers Club Wednesday. In another tie, the BNKE beat the BPCL 3-0.

Golf tourney

Calcutta: Renowned golfers of the country will participate in the 54th All-India Railway Golf tournament at the Tollygunge Club from Thursday. The two-day meet will have the finals on Friday.

Saini leads

Calcutta: Ashbeer Saini on Wednesday shot an even par to take a two-stroke lead over Syed Saquib in the Category A qualifying round of the Bengal & Faldo Series Junior Golf Championship, being played at the RCGC. Saquib hit one-over 73.

Table tennis

Calcutta: In a bid to promote the sport in the districts, the West Bengal Table Tennis Association (WTTA) is planning to launch a development programme. Besides, including the financial and equipment support, the programme will also include advance coaching schemes within an estimated budget of Rs 10 lakh.

Schumi beaten

Beijing: Swede Mattias Ekstrom beat seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher to win the Race of Champions on Wednesday.

Pirelli no

Milan: Pirelli has ruled out replacing Bridgestone as Formula One tyre supplier from 2011, the Italian company said.
