Gupta, Dubey file papers

Jamshedpur, Nov. 7: Banna Gupta of Congress and Pramod Lal of JMM were among 33 candidates who filed their nomination papers today, the last day for doing so for the first phase of elections scheduled on November 25.

The aspirants included 10 from Jamshedpur (East), 16 from Jamshedpur (West) and seven from Jugsalai reserved seat. Scrutiny of papers will take place on Monday.

Candidates who submitted their papers included JMM rebel Anand Bihari Dubey (Jamshedpur, East) and BJP rebel Haradhan Das (Jugsalai). Both are contesting as Independents.

Earlier, it was a show of strength by both Gupta and Dubey as they proceeded to the office of the sub-divisional officer along with their supporters. Flags, drumbeats and huge convoys of cars marked the procession of both candidates. Gupta and Dubey assembled at Aam Bagan in Sakchi with their supporters before the procession wound their way to the SDO's office.

Not to be outdone, the 27-odd Independents also made their way to the campus with their supporters.

Gupta, who switched from Samajwadi Party to Congress after his candidature was confirmed, slipped into the SDO’s office with Congress secretary Bharat Singh and three other party leaders even as Dubey waited for his turn to follow.

Dubey, who had tried hard to bag the JMM ticket but was eventually denied the banner, came up with a huge number of slogan-shouting supporters.

Das, who garnered 54,000 votes on a BJP ticket from Jugsalai in the last Assembly elections, was ignored by the party this time.

Among others who filed nominations from Jamshedpur (West) were Aftab Alam Javed (Samajwadi Party), Ajit Kumar Yadav (Trinimool Congress), Sambhunath Chowdhury (Rashtriya Lok Dal) and Baby Mahto (Aamra Bangali). Former MLA Hasan Rizvi and Md Nazim Khan filed their papers as Independent candidates from the same seat.

Ramdev Thakur, Subodh Lohar, Ramvilas Sharma, Sanjay Thakur, Ashish Namta, Dinesh Varu, Gopal Lohar were among the Independents who filed their nominations from Jamshedpur (East) seat. Six independents filed their papers from Jugsalai.
