It was India’s first IIT, Kharagpur inaugurated at the site of the Hijli Detention Camp in Kharagpur. The autonomous university has been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Candidates willing to take admission to B.Tech, BS and Dual Degree programmes must qualify for the JEE Advanced. To get admitted to the B.Arch course, students have to appear for the NATA exam. Most importantly, students must have passed the 10+2 school leaving examination from a recognized board. The final admission procedure is strictly based on merit.

To get students prepared for landing jobs, the Career Development Cell of IIT, Kharagpur operates a variety of programmes including soft skills and holistic development. Placement drives of IIT, Kharagpur observe the highest package of 80 LPA and an average of 11.23 LPA.
A vast central library; a digital library with e-resources; various laboratories including Virtual labs, Robotics labs, Computer labs, Science labs, Engineering labs; smart classrooms; on-campus WIFI access; seminar halls; and three auditoriums are amongst the major academic facilities provided by the IIT, Kharagpur. Admission Procedure
Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur's admissions are conducted online. To apply for their undergraduate degrees, candidates must meet all the required eligibility requirements of the course for which the candidate is applying for. The candidate has to go through the online admission process in the website. Most importantly the candidates must get a valid Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced score in order to be admitted to B.Tech, BS, and Dual Degree programs. For the B.Arch program, the candidate must qualify for the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) exam. While the admission criteria and eligibility differ from course to course, all students must have passed their 10+2 school leaving test from a recognized board of secondary education. Primarily admission to this IIT, Kharagpur takes place on the merit obtained in the aforesaid exams.
Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur' also offers joint MTech-PhD programs in different specialization, admission are made according to the marks obtained in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), For Joint MSc-PhD admission will be based on the entrance exam- Joint Admission Test (JAM), programs like- Masters Program in Medical Science and Technology (MMST), Masters Program in Law (LL.M) the students seeking admission for postgraduate degree courses should be graduate in the relevant subject from a recognized university.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur scholarships to all approved students enrolled in the 4-year B.Tech. (Hons. ), 5-year Dual degree, 5-year B.Arch. (Hons. ), and 5-year Integrated M.Sc. programmes on the basis of merit and financial need. Not more than 25% of the applicants accepted each year to IIT, Kharagpur's undergraduate and dual degree programmes will get one of these scholarships.
