DC fans across the world were sent into a tizzy after the film’s director, Todd Phillips, shared the first official image of Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker. The Oscar-nominated actor plays the iconic Batman villain in a new origins film, reported NME.

The photo, posted on Phillips’s Instagram account, shows Phoenix in a green jacket and with long hair. However, he’s free of the make-up that the character usually sports. Phillips captioned the photo “Arthur”, that seemingly confirms rumours that the character’s name is Arthur Fleck.

The film releases in October next year and also stars Oscar winner Robert DeNiro.
