Patna: Two inmates fled when a certain Mohammad Juman Mian, an undertrial lodged in Shaheed Khudiram Bose Central jail in Muzaffarpur, allegedly attempted suicide on Friday by slitting his throat purportedly with a blade.

Mian, facing charges of theft, was found lying in a pool of blood in the court lock-up. He was rushed to the sadar hospital where his condition is stated to be critical.

Mian, a resident of Samraspur village under the jurisdiction of Kanti police station in Muzaffarpur, alleged he was being tortured by the officials of the jail. Marks of injury around his neck and arms were found.

Muzaffarpur senior superintendent of police Harpreet Kaur confirmed the incident and said the reason behind the incident was yet to be ascertained. "The police will record his statement once his condition becomes normal," she said.

Sources said this was Mian's second attempt to end his life. He had earlier told the police that he was fed-up with life and wanted to get rid of it.

"Humiliation and harassment have become routine. I am frustrated with my life," Mian is learnt to have told the police at the time of his second attempt to commit suicide.#

Muzaffarpur deputy superintendent of police Mukul Kumar Ranjan said undertrials Raju Sahni and Raushan Kumar managed to escape when the security personnel were busy getting the injured admitted to the hospital for treatment. While Raju is a resident of Ahiyapur, Raushan is a native of Minapur in Muzaffarpur.
