Menu: The mandatory all-day breakfast menu found in all coffee shops aside, the highlights of Cal 27 are the Taj Autograph Collection (see box right), Taste of Calcutta (Luchi Aloo Dum to Maachher Jhol), Comfort Food (Thali-style plating of all-time Indian faves, Khichri to Meen Moilee) and Classic Grills (inspired by the hotel’s Grill By The Pool promotion that warm ups every winter). Plus, dessert, beverages, cocktails and mocktails.

Design: Inspired by the khorkhori janala, velvet fabrics, chequered floors and the courtyard concept found in old-Calcutta rajbaris... but with a contemporary touch.

Colours: Gold, teal, black and white.

History: Originally, The Esplanade, which opened in October 1989, with a very British feel. In June 2001, it was relaunched as The Hub with emphasis on Italian food.

Why Cal 27? The pin code of the Alipore star hotel is 700027.
