The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on Wednesday arrested a clerk at Dumka district education office (DEO), Iftekar, for taking a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from Ajay Kumar Dubey, the director of Western English School here. Dubey had kept his school open despite the nationwide lockdown. Dubey was showcaused by the DEO when the matter came to light. Not getting a satisfactory reply to the showcause, the DEO issued an order stating that Western English School would stay shut even when all schools reopened after April 14. The order also barred the school from conducting admission. However, Iftekar told Dubey that the matter could be settled if he paid Rs 5 lakh. When Dubey said he couldn’t pay such a huge amount, the deal was struck at Rs 4 lakh in four instalments. Dubey complained against Iftekhar to the ACB.
Cops axed
SSP Anoop Birtharay on Wednesday suspended Birsanagar police station OC Sunil Kumar Kushwaha, junior SI Manikant Singh and constable Jai Kumar, for dereliction of duty, prima facie, which led to the drowning of Vicky Mahato in a pond on Monday evening. The Birsanagar patrolling team had advanced threateningly towards the youth for violating the lockdown. Vicky, who was near the pond, jumped into it out of fear. The police had then left the spot.
Jail suicide
Chotu Tiwari, 30, lodged at Birsa Munda Central Jail for allegedly strangulating his wife to death, was found hanging from a window rod. Officer in0charge of Khelgaon police station Mukti Narayan Singh said it was a case of suicide.
Scientists chip in
Scientists and other staff of the Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR) collected their two days’ salary to contribute Rs 13.28 lakh each to the chief minister’s relief fund and PM Cares to flight coronavirus.
Each fund will get Rs 13.28 lakh to fight Covid-19. CIMFR will also feed 900 daily wage earners from April 9 through the contribution of members of the CIMFR staff club on two campuses at Barwa Road and Digwadih, and ensure that social distancing norms are followed during the meal.
