Jamshedpur, May 14: In the era of information technology, computers will no longer remain alien to the police personnel in Jharkhand.
The state government has decided to computerise three government railway police (GRP) stations ? Jamshedpur, Ranchi and Bokaro ? as a part of the first-phase modernisation drive.
Inspector general of GRP (Jharkhand) A.K. Sinha said the police stations would be equipped with personal computers (PCs) along with other electronic gadgets, shortly.
?Each police station will be provided with a PC having elephantine memory for feeding data related to crimes and criminals,? he said.
Sinha, who was in the city for a routine inspection of the GRP station, said past cases and a catalogue of criminals would be digitised at the three GRP police stations. ?At present, GRP stations are preserving records in paper files, but the files will be replaced with PCs,? he said.
The GRP stations, which are situated at strategic locations under Chakradharpur and Ranchi divisions of the South Eastern Railway, would be computerised phase-wise, he added.
In the first phase, only those police stations which deal with a record number of cases have been selected. The GRP headquarters in Ranchi has a databank of criminals operating in Jharkhand and the neighbouring Chhattisgarh, Bengal and Bihar.
?We have digitised information about hardcore criminals, anti-social elements operating in Jharkhand and the neighbouring states, besides other information. One can access any information related to criminal activities, criminals and progress of the cases with the click of the mouse,? Sinha said.
He added that a similar database would also be formulated in various police stations in different phases. ?The government has sanctioned money for procuring computers. The department has completed the formalities for floating tenders to invite bidders for supplying computers,? Sinha said.
He added that the GRP personnel would be imparted training to handle the PCs.
