Jamshedpur, May 13: The agitating teachers of National Institute of Technology (NIT) here called off their strike today.
The decision for calling off the strike was taken at NIT Teachers’ Association’s executive committee meeting held this evening.
The teachers were on strike since April 28.
Soon after the executive committee meeting, NIT Teachers’ Association’s president M.K. Agrawal declared that teachers would resume duty from tomorrow.
He said the teachers would be working during the summer vacation, too, to make up for the loss due to the strike.
“Many of us were feeling embarrassed while continuing with the strike as it hampered the studies of the students and brought a bad name to the institute,” said a teacher.
Agrawal said the strike was called off following a request made by S.K. Sarangi, the director of NIT, Rourkela.
“Sarangi’s appointment as the director of NIT, Jamshedpur, has been cleared by the ministry of human resource development, New Delhi. In an email to NIT Teachers’ Association, he has asked the teachers to call off their strike before he joins on May 16,” Agrawal told The Telegraph.
The NIT Teachers’ Association president said Sarangi would be the director of NIT in Rourkela as well as the NIT in Jamshedpur.
“After getting the email from Sarangi and gathering information from our sources in the ministry of human resource development, we withdrew our agitation,” said Agrawal.
About 100 teachers of the NIT have been agitating for the fulfilment of their demands, including implementing a career advancement scheme.
In the first phase, the teachers had kept their demand confined to the implementation of career advancement scheme. Later, they included the demand of replacing acting NIT director professor Akhileswar Mishra, as they felt that he was not working in the interest of the teachers.
