Altogether 29 Bangladesh nationals were arrested in Tripura from two different locations — Agartala Railway Station and the Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport — for “illegally” entering the state.

A GRP official said a local court on Sunday has remanded six of the 23 arrested from the railway station to three days’ police custody while the rest were sent to judicial custody.

The arrested were in the age bracket of 19-40 years, the official said, adding the government railway police (GRP) and BSF personnel were involved in the operation carried out at the railway station.

“They were held on Saturday afternoon. We are looking into all aspects of this growing influx, including the recent unrest triggered by the anti-quota protest in the neighbouring country. They have said they are going to Chennai because life was becoming tough back home,” the official said. Most of the arrested are from the railway Chapai Nawabganj district of Bangladesh and the others from Brahmanbaria and Jessore districts.

Apart from the 23 arrested at the railway station, six other Bangladeshis were arrested from the MBB airport, also in Agartala, by CISF personnel on Sunday after they could not provide satisfactory answers during their questioning.

There were also some doubts over the Aadhaar cards produced by them, a source said.
