Guwahati, Feb. 25: Krishna Das, Ranji medium pacer from Barpeta, today staged a comeback after a five-month injury layoff with a five-wicket haul against hosts Guwahati on the first day of their Nuruddin Trophy pre-quarterfinal match at Nehru Stadium here.

The lanky teenager hauled five for 71 as Guwahati were all out for 386 in 78.5 overs in the first innings today. “I am comfortable with only a month’s practice and am not facing any problems with the arm which was operated upon. However, I am not exerting myself fully in order to avoid any problems,” Das said after the day’s play.

Das had sustained arm and facial injuries in a car accident in Barpeta on October 6 last year. A Ranji debutant in the 2005-06 season, he had to skip the last Ranji season recuperating from the injuries.

The day’s play also saw Guwahati opener Abhijit Singha Roy missing his maiden century at the senior level throwing away his wicket at 94 (18x4).

Besides, middle order batsman Rajib Kalita missed a century as he ran short of partners at the other end. Kalita, who came in to bat at number 7, was unbeaten on 87 (10x4) at the end of the innings.

The other notable scorers for Guwahati were former Ranji player Gokul Sharma (69, 7x4) and former Ranji player R.K. Mritunjoy Gohain (37, 8x4). Apart from Das’s five for 71, Amal Das of Barpeta notched three for 61.

At the end of the day’s play, Barpeta were 18 for one in five overs.
