Manipur capital Imphal continued to reel under flood for the third straight day in the wake of Cyclone Remal even though the sun was out and there was very little rainfall on Friday.
According to official sources, eight of the state’s 16 districts have been affected, 24,265 houses have been damaged, a population of 1,88,143 affected.
The administration has set up 56 relief camps across the affected districts and using drones to locate worst affected areas to carry out rescue and relief operations.
The overall scene in the capital city remained worrisome as flood water hardly receded.
Residents said the scene is quite bad. “We still have four feet of water in our establishments. It came down by half a feet but water is hardly receding. Market areas have suffered extensive losses. The water from the rivers flowing down through the market areas. Thangal Bazar, Paona Bazar ... all affected. We are worried about the water now and then we will have to worry about pst-flood scene as well.”
Affected Imphal landmarks included the Raj Bhawan, Raj Medicity, Khuman Lampak Stadium, Manipur Press Club, Ema Market (biggest women market in Asia),the Directorate of Higher Education and MG avenue. Over 85 areas in the city were affected by floods. Altogether four persons have died in the floods, two due to electrocution and two due to drowning, an official said.
At least 40 NFRF personnel and six additional motorboats reached Imphal on Wednesday night to help in relief and rescue operations along with local volunteers.
