Silchar, Dec. 5: The gangrape of a Mizo woman from Champhai district in Mizoram on Thursday was condemned by all sections of people of Cachar district.
However, no formal statement condemning it has been issued by any civic organisation in this south Assam district, close to Mizoram.
Sougat Roy, a schoolteacher, said, “This incident has tarnished the fair name of this town, which is known for its culture, tradition, love for literature and people’s respect for women .” Srilata Bannerji, a college student, said, “Mizos are our neighbours and we love their dance, music and friendly nature. We should not allow such misdeeds to spoil the link between the people of this region and Mizoram.” The medical test of the 30-year-old Mizo woman was conducted on Saturday, but the report is yet to be released.
Police said all the seven accused were sent to Silchar jail yesterday after their police remand was cancelled.
