South Africa suffered a batting collapse in the final session of Day III as England won the second Test at Old Trafford by an innings and 85 runs to make the series 1-1.

Keegan Petersen and Rassie van der Dussen batted through the afternoon session to take South Africa to 141 for three in their second innings.

But in Saturday’s final session, Ollie Robinson and James Anderson ran through the remaining South African batting line-up after captain Ben Stokes dismissed Van der Dussen and Petersen in quick succession.

From 141 for 3, the Proteas lost their last seven wickets for only 38 to be bowled out for 179.

Petersen (42) and Van der Dussen (41), who batted with a broken finger, had put on 87 for the fourth wicket.

But once got rid of both set batsmen, the remaining Proteas wickets fell like nine pins.

“It has been amazing to come back from last week’s disappointment (defeat) at Lord’s (in the first Test). “This result gives us a lot of confidence back and sets the series up nicely for the last Test at The Oval,” England captain Stokes, also adjudged Man of the Match for his century and crucial wickets, said later.

Stokes also praised England’s wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Foakes, who hit a hundred as well.

“Foakes has showed the hard work he had put in over the last six months.”
