Smriti ‘Simi’ Mehra added another ‘first’ to her CV by winning the first-ever women’s professional golf tournament, held in the city, at Tollygunge Club, on Friday. It was, however, a close one for Simi, her three-day aggregate of three-over 213 only a stroke better than 18-year-old rookie Tanya Wadhwa at the ninth leg of the Tour.
Seven strokes behind at third place was Nalini Singh, who brought in a three-over 73 on Friday, while local pro Neha Tripathi finished fourth a stroke behind on 222, her fine 69 on the final day not enough to compensate for the disastrous 10-over 80 on Thursday.
Tour leader Sharmila Nicollet disappointed with nine-over 79 on Friday to finish in sixth position.
State finance minister Asim Dasgupta said the government would sanction Rs 1.5 crore for the repair and renovation of the Mohun Bagan club galleries after the club officials met him at Writers’ Buildings on Friday.
Some members of the production team of Egaro, a film celebrating the club’s IFA Shield triumph in 1911, also requested Dasgupta to waive the entertainment tax for the film. The Mohun Bagan officials also requested Dasgupta to consider relocating the race course for a sports complex for soccer and other sports on the sprawling greens.
