A third-year medical student of a private college was killed and another medical student and a junior doctor were severely injured when the speeding sedan car they were in rammed against a tree in an integrated township complex where the institute is located in Durgapur in the small hours of Monday.

Deceased Anagh Manna,23, was a resident of Kotwali police station limits in West Midnapore.

Medical student hailing from Calcutta, Nilabha Roy, 23, and junior doctor and Assam resident Swapnil Borah, 23, is critically injured.

Doctors in the Durgapur hospital treating Nilabha and Swapnil said both have suffered head injuries.

Security guards of the medical college and hospital had rushed the trio to the hospital where the doctors on duty declared Anagh dead on arrival.

Police sources said thatAnagh was driving the car owned by Swapnil, when around 12.30am on Monday, he lost control of the speeding vehicle.

Sources said that the car was being driven at such a high speed that the tree and an electric pole got uprooted on impact after the vehicle rammed into them.

Police said that the deceased and the two injured youths used to stay in rented accommodation outside the institute campus and not in the institute’s hostel.

Gautam Ghosh, the principal of the private medical college, said on Monday: “One of our students has died in the accident. Two others are undergoing treatment.”

A police source said they would conduct an awareness camp among students of the medical college to help avert such accidents in future.

“Accidents often happen on that stretch (of the integrated township). Action will be taken against reckless driving,” said a police officer.
